    Hiring

  • COMMERCIAL - You are premitted to solicit your own job, however you must be cleared through the Hall
  • INDUSTRIAL - All hiring is done through the Carpenters Office, from the list.

    Travel
    If you travel over 40 Kms, you are entitled to Travel Allowance.
    If you travel 60 Kms or more, you are entitled To $80.00 per day (Commercial).

    General

    1. EACH TIME you are laid off, it is your responsibility to call the office and put your name back on the list. Your name comes off when you go to work. If you worked less than 160 HOURS in a twelve (12) month cycle, your name will go back to where it was, but this is NOT done automatically by the office.
    2. There is Zero tolerance for altercations, Liquor, or Drugs on ANY Construction Site.
    3. You are not free to make any arrangements with an employer, with respect to the Collective Agreement. There is no make up time in the agreement.
    4. Any questions should be referred to your Job (Shop) Steward.

    Benefit Plan
    You must work for a UNIONIZED Contractor 450 Hours in order to obtain coverage in the Benefit Plan. Once you have coverage in the plan, you MUST work 150 hours per month in order to cover your premium, or you will have to make a payment yourself. When you are laid off, you can "Self Pay" to maintain coverage in the plan, but you can not "Buy into" the plan.

    Self Pay premiums are

    First 6 Months of Self-pay up to age 65
    $67.00 per month for the first 6 months (without Dental Coverage)
    OR $108.00 per month including Dental

    After 6 Months of Self Pay and up to age 65
    $75.00 per month for medical only (No Dental)
    OR $116.00 per month including Dental

    Retiring
    Members turning 65 who plan to retire and not work at the trade any more, must call the office to advise us of your intentions (this should be done the month before your 65th birthday)

    If you are 65 and a member for 20 years or more, the Local will pay your dues starting the month after your 65th birthday. If you do not advise us before you turn 65, the local will begin paying your dues the month following the month that you have squared up your dues.

    If you are 65 and a member for less than 20 years, the Local will reduce your dues to $15.00 per month, again you must advise the office of your intentions prior to your 65th birthday.

    All of the above provisions apply only if you are NOT going to look for work and are going to remove your name from the Out of Work List.



    Income Tax Receipts For Dues
    The local sends out receipts for income tax purposes by the end of January of each year. This receipt is for all dues RECEIVED in this office DURING the calendar year. Any dues received at the office past December 31st will be applied to the following years receipt.

    Juristiction
    From Work:
    All erection and dismantling of forms is the work of Carpenters. The only exemption would be Keyway forms that will be destroyed.

    Material Handling:
    Laborers may stockpile material, Carpenters From Stockpile to point of erection.

    Scaffolding:
    All erection and dismantling is the work of theCarpenters. Only exemptions is for Masonry Contractors.

    If you have any questions. Refer them to your Steward. If the answer is not known, call the office. If you don't know something, don't be afraid to ask, we are here to serve you the members.

    WHERE THERE IS CONFLICT BETWEEN THE CONTRACT OR BY-LAWS, AND THIS WEBPAGE CONTENT, THE CONTRACT OR BY-LAWS SHALL PREVAIL

    Monthly Meetings
    The Regular Monthly Meeting is held in Sydney on the 2nd Thursday of every month. The meeting is held at 24 Cossitt Heights Drive, Sydney and begins at 8:00 PM.

    The Information Meeting in Port Hawkesbury is held on the 3rd Thrusday of every month. The meeting is held at the Maritime Inn in Port Hawkesbury and begins at 7:00 PM.

    ALL MEETINGS ARE "NO SMOKING"



    Dues
    Regular Monthly dues are $25.00 per month and must be paid by ALL members whether they are working or not.

    Working Dues are $1.00 per hour. When you work for a unionized employer, this is deducted from your pay. This is not to be confused with your regular dues which is YOUR responsibility to pay.

    DUES ARE DUE AT THE FIRST OF EVERY MONTH, OR PAID IN ADVANCE
    Members who go to 3 months arrears and do not pay up all their dues before the end of the 3rd month do not qualify for the Death Benefit, as per Section 45 K of the Constitution. These members are also not eligible to Vote, as per Section 45 L

    LOCAL 1588's New Death Benefit Plan

    Members who go to 6 months in arrears, and do not pay on their dues before the end of the 6th month will be suspended from Membership, as per Section 45 M of the Constitution. Dues must be Received in the Office prior to the last day of the month.

    RRSP


    THIS PLAN IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT AS OF JULY 1, 2000


    Pension
    When you work for a Unionized Contractor they must contribute
    $4.70 per hour (COMMERCIAL JOURNEYMEN)
    and $5.00 per hour (INDUSTRIAL JOURNEYMEN)
    Effective July 1, 2004)
    to the Carpenter's Pension Plan. The plan is administered by ManuLife.
